Each of these cushions was made, beginning to end, by one woman. They are works of art, with every design created and then hand-embroidered by the maker.

Every woman working on Sabbara cushions is also a Syrian refugee based in Lebanon. When you buy one of these, you get a beautiful item that will last a lifetime. Each maker will get enough of an income to provide her family with food and rent for two weeks.

Sabbara work with women who have been displaced from their homes and country, but who have also had to deal with extra economic and emotional hardships following the loss of a husband.

But the Amal cushions are creations made with hope (amal is one of the Arabic words for hope). The designs and techniques used echo Syrian methods, keeping the traditions of the country alive. And they are beautiful, intricate and carefully made. When you buy one of these, you aren’t just helping a woman in need, you’re respecting the quality of her work.
