Amandla Wine
The South-African winery owned and controlled by black women
- Location Western Cape, South Africa
- Working on Equality, scholarship funding
Amandla have named their first three wines Power (Shiraz Zinfandel), Future (Sauvignon Blanc) and Freedom (blush rose). And those names sum up who they are: a winery run entirely by black women.
Managing director Praisy Dlamini dreamed of a wine project that would showcase the skills, knowledge and the sheer joyfulness of the women around her. In a country where racial inequalities are still stark, Amandla is not only black-run, but black-owned.
The women of Amandla know they are working in an industry traditionally dominated by white men. And they see their work as a chance to change the game and to open gates and inspire the people who come after them.
Why they are different:
Praisy Dlamini knows her wine, having studied agriculture, graduated from the Cape Winemakers Guild Protégé programme and worked with various other wine companies. Amandla combines her expertise with her dream.
Why they are kind:
Amandla know how to pay it forward. They set aside 2% of their profits for their scholarship fund, intended for the children of local grape farming families.
