- Working on Repairing environmental damage and fighting exploitation
Skylark want to produce extraordinary coffee, but they also want the coffee supply chain to be just and fair. They want to reimagine the whole system and hope their work will show others how it can be.
Roaster and buyer Micah Sherer has experience throughout the coffee world; running cafes, researching supply chains and demonstrating his barista skills in global competitions. Overseer Ben Szobody is a journalist and was one of the first coffee bloggers.
Through Skylark, they are using their knowledge and skills to create change. Skylark pays specialist coffee suppliers double the usual Fair Trade rate. And then they also donate a further £1 per kilo to various charity projects.
Why they are different:
They celebrate every step of their process, from finding the best beans to the look of their final product - celebrated wildlife artist Jackie Morris painted the birds on their packaging and the words come from Robert Macfarlane, Britain’s best-known nature writer.
Why they are kind:
The projects they support are varied. There are those in coffee-growing countries, like The Stumping Project, which helps Ethiopian farmers regenerate their trees and find sustainable models. Closer to home, there’s the Knepp Wildland Foundation, a leading rewilding organisation, or Pro Baristas, a charity aimed at training unemployed young people in Sussex for jobs in the coffee industry.
