The Smoke Folk
An award-winning sustainable smokery helping people to find employment
- Location Frome, Somerset
- Working on Helping those facing barriers to employment
Way before The Smoke Folk started, founder Oliver Jones inherited two things from his grandfather. A 1950s salmon knife and a love of the smoked fish it was used with. A move to Frome in Somerset felt like a chance for Oliver to make his love of smoked foods into something more.
The smokery operates as a social enterprise. They provide jobs, training and volunteering opportunities for people in the local area - all of whom have faced barriers to employment. These could include mental health issues, lack of qualifications or dealing with the challenges of being in rural area with limited transport.
They’ve now been running for several years, growing a team around them, and pushing the idea of what a smokery can do - experimenting with different woods and cures.
Why they are different:
This is next-level smoked food. Their smoked sea salt and black pepper take what could be basic ingredients and - with care and skill - take the taste into the stratosphere. The Smoke Folk have also won several awards for their innovative smoked nut flavours and their fish and cheeses.
Why they are kind:
In addition to their social enterprise work, The Smoke Folk also make sure that their ingredients are sustainable sourced, from as close to to the Somerset base as possible. And, as it’s impossible to create smoke without burning something, they are also careful to use woods that come from responsible sources who can demonstrate their commitment to responsible forest stewardship.
