West House Pottery is part of West House, Cumbria’s leading care and support provider for children, young people and adults with learning differences.
- Location Cumbria, UK
- Working on Opportunities for those with learning differences
For over 30 years, West House has helped people build confidence, develop skills and live fulfilling, independent lives that are supported, encouraged and valued every step of the way. In the Pottery, creativity and care come together. Each piece is made entirely by hand by the people West House support, from the first roll of clay to the final firing. Using fine stoneware and traditional hand-building techniques, the potters create simple and practical homewares that are both beautiful and built to last. Every item is glazed and finished by hand, making each one a little different, a reflection of the person who made it.
The Pottery is more than a workshop - it’s a place of belonging and pride. Every piece sold helps West House continue our work, providing opportunities for people to learn, grow and take part in something meaningful.
Why they are different:
The people supported by West House shape the clay, press the moulds, attach the handles, dip the glaze and load the kiln themselves. Each potter has their own stamp and their own initials pressed into the base so you know exactly whose hands made your mug or bowl.
Why they are kind:
They create a nurturing, creative environment where people build confidence, develop real vocational skills and work towards greater independence. Every sale helps fund tools, materials and opportunities that support people to grow in ambition as well as ability.
