Wiston Estate
A UK winery leading the way in sustainable and regenerative production
- Location South Downs, Sussex
- Working on Soil health, land regeneration and biodiversity
The Wiston Estate is owned and run by the Goring family. And, although the Romans grew vines on the site millennia ago, they only started to plant grapes in 2006.
Soil health is paramount at Wiston. They combine the latest research with traditional methods to nurture their soil. They don’t use herbicides, and opt for traditional tillage methods of weed control. They compost and also mulch their prunings and grape skins to feed the soil. It’s a very long way from thin, poor ground created by industrial agriculture.
In the winter, sheep graze between the vines. In the spring, cover crops - often varieties of clover - are planted to fix nitrogen in the soil and further increase biodiversity. In the summer, beehives are moved to the vineyards to help pollinate wild flowers and trees.
Why they are different:
All of this effort has created some seriously good wine. Their traditionally-made cuvees have won awards at many international wine competitions and are considered amongst the best in the UK.
Why they are kind:
The Wiston Estate is part of the Weald to Waves scheme, where local landowners and the South Downs National Park are working together to restore wildlife habitats and establish a nature recovery corridor from the High Weald to the Sussex Coast, encompassing 20,000 hectares of contiguous habitat - many species have already returned to the area.
