It’s a proper plum job, this jam. It’s made in small batches, seasonally, when the plums in a particular orchard in Stratton-On-The-Fosse are ripe. When makers Root Connection are out of plums, they stop making jam.
So it’s seasonal, it’s delicious and it’s part of a wider project to help end rural homelessness. Root Connections have a market garden and their project helps those in a linked hostel, The Dairy House, and in the wider community.
Homelessness is often thought of as an urban issue, but there are homeless people in rural areas too and - often - those areas don’t attract the same level of attention or support. Root Connections wants to raise awareness of rural homelessness, whilst also proving practical support to the local community.
Working in the Root Connections market garden could mean harvesting for their veg box scheme, planting seeds and bulbs that are destined to become beautiful cut flowers or tending to the trees that produce the top-class plums for this jam. Meanwhile, vulnerable adults with complex needs can find a community and develop both social and workplace skills.
