The Chocolate Detective
- Location South London
- Working on Sustainable cocoa growing and growers’ economies
The Chocolate Detective aims to put “the most ethical and delectable chocolate” in front of customers - and to make every link in the supply chain absolutely visible. They are delicious in every way.
And founder Chantal Coady knows chocolate, and knows it like few others. She was the founder of high-end chocolate brand Rococo and has even received an OBE for her services to chocolate in the UK.
The Chocolate Detective is a mix of creation, from Chantal’s always original recipes, and curation, where she sources chocolates from like-minded creators in other countries. The third pillar is connection - the company work with sustainable cocoa growers in Grenada and the focus is on keeping as much profit as possible in the local economy.
Why they are different
Chocolate is Chantal’s life passion. In addition to her OBE, she is also a chair of the board of The Academy of Chocolate. She’s uncompromising in terms of taste and in terms of what she thinks her industry should be.
Why they are kind
The world of cocoa production is still a murky one. There are still issues with slavery. Female workers are often exploited. And growers in general are treated unfairly, with their livelihoods at the mercy of global commodities markets. Producers like The Chocolate Detective, with solid commitments to fairness and transparency, are the start of changing all of that.
